Outstanding Roman cameo carved in a three layers sardonyx : the face stands out in white cream on the bottom of sardoine brown. Hair and the gown is carved in a top layer of honey-colored. Representation is that of a woman bust, left profile. The hairstyle is hair odds and learned catogan in the back. It is perhaps the empress Julia Domna (c. 170 - 217), daughter of Julius Bassianus a significant Arab, Syrian Emesa (Homs), which was the second wife of Septimius Severus and mother of Caracalla and Geta.
Wonderful treatment in the realistic style. The artist has beautifully used the layers of the agate.
The back of the cameo and the edge were repolished during 19th century.
Excellent condition.
Size: 24 x 19 x 6 mm
Roman Art, Severan Dynasty, circa 200 AD.
