A magnificent early 18th century red lacquer bureau bookcase; the upper section with double dome top surmounted by turned giltwood finials, the arched doors with bevelled mirror plates opening to reveal, on the reverse, large scale Chinese figures and a fitted interior with an arrangement of small drawers, pigeon holes, and folio compartments around a central cupboard with concave doors and flanked by columns forming secret compartments; with candle slides beneath the outer doors; the lower section having a fall front opening to reveal a further fitted interior, with another small central opening and hidden compartments within the pilasters on either side, also with a well beneath; all above two short and two long drawers in the base with engraved brass handles and lock escutcheons, raised on ball feet. The bureau bookcase japanned throughout with a great variety of chinoiseries in shades of gold on a deep red ground, including birds, flowers, animals and rocky landscapes, with members of the court, equestrians and other figure subjects.
