Date of birth: 1920

Date of death: 2002

Nationality : Ingmar Anton RELLING

The iconic Norwegian designer Ingmar Anton Relling was born in 1920 in Sikkvlven at Norways North-West Coast. From the age of 16 he worked at the Vestlandske Mobelfabrikk AS. Seven years later he started his studies in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Oslo's SKHS (Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole), a course which had been newly introduced only a year before and to which his brother Adolf introduced him. After finishing his studies in 1947 he worked in the drawing offices of Rastad & Relling AS before setting up his own studio in 1950. For several years he concentrated on interior architecture and worked on churches, libraries and a hotel, but from 1960 Relling dedicated himself entirely to furniture design. In doing this he became Norway's most famous and recognised furniture designer as well as one of the greatest contributors to the concept 'Scandinavian Design'. Relling attained international acclaim with his SIESTA chair. The series represented new thinking in terms of both construction and form. Most distinctive is the simple, high-backed first edition in light beech, upholstered in sailcloth or leather. After the creation of Siesta, Relling worked consistently with chairs made from laminated beech, above all easy chairs. In some of his works he employed the equivalent qualities of steel. From Relling's range of chairs, special mention should be made of Rest, Flex, Lido, Tema, Cox and Manta. All are original in terms of construction and have a compact form of sculptural quality. The light, resilient and elegant chairs unite technical, functional and aesthetic qualities of an exceptional standard.
