Christian Fleury, expert in modern art in Paris

Christian Fleury, expert in modern art in Paris

Specialized in Mediterranean painting, the Christian Fleyry gallery exhibits paintings from the post-impressionism to the painters of 1980s (Ch. Camoin, R. Dufy, H. Manguin, A. Marquet, J. Puy, L. Valtat, H. Lebasque, M. Vlaminck, J. Cavaillès, Y. Brayer, B. Buffet, H. Hartung, G. Mathieu, A. Lanskoy, O. Zadkine, A. Volti, M-E. Sarthou...).

"I have chosen the modern art period because this is the one I like most and I have always been attracted by Mediterranean art with the Fauvism and same for the artists from Brittany since I come from there and that I love the Pont-Aven school", says Christian Fleury.

Modern art is often associated to Contemporary art in auction sales. But for Christian Fleury, Contemporary art "is another way of dealing: contemporary art is more about promotion and is a less stable market. My sons will perhaps deal on contemporary art!".

There isn't leading school on the market; Some schools are collected by certain collectors and other schools by other collectors. Today the market is focusing on a large scope of schools such as the cubism, the fauvism and the Ecole de Paris.

Which artist should gain in interest in the upcoming years? "If I had to choose a single artist I would say that Soulages is very trendy; but who knows how long he will still be collected? Does he disserve such prices? I don't know. History will tell us. I would personally advice an investor to collect fauvism paintings who are expensive but who will keep rising in value. Impressionism is unreachable, so fauvism is a solution. All the classics such as Braque and Picasso are also sure values", says Christian Fleury.

As most art dealers say, a client should always choose what he likes most. When man can buy such pieces, investing shouldn't be the only purchasing motivation. Good for the client if he sells his pieces with a gain but it isn't always the fact. "Building a collection should be the main motivation", says Christian Fleury.

  • Karol (2011-04-11) Report to moderator excuse me for my english is'nt very good. maggy you say that many artist are sold at their value... how can you be sure of that? what defines the price of a painting or a drowing? I don't think that all the artist of the renaissance are still very known today, many are forgiving because they didn't have talent. Why should it be diferent for our contemporary period? thank you, Karol.
  • maggy maniola (2011-04-11) Report to moderator "contemporary art is more about promotion"?! I'm tired of always reading the same things about contemporary art! It's like contemporary art and emerging artist haven't any talent and that prices are only made by the marketing and the press. Weren't the Italian primitives also supported by a form of promotion thanks to the big families in Rome and Florence? And haven't day any talent?! some of the contemporary art is speculative and manipulated but this is only true for a dozen of artists; all the others are unknown or simply sold at their value.
