Edward Horswell, expert in modern sculpture

Edward Horswell, expert in modern sculpture

The Sladmore Gallery is the world's leading sculpture specialist with over 40 years' experience in supplying fine bronzes from 1850 to the present day. The Gallery is a specialist in works by the renowned sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti. Edward Horswell answers to the Artfinding's exclusive interview about his specialty and vision of the art market.

There is a disparity in prices between sculpture and paintings. But there are some exception such as the Giacometi's Walking Man sold for over a million $ in February 2010. But sculpture tends to sell at a discount to paintings. For Edward Horswell this is because sculptures are often editions and therefore there are more than one piece of each model on the market. Nevertheless, if one adds up the value of the full edition, sculptures become more expensive than paintings.

Lets take Pablo Picasso as an example. This artist is more known for his paintings than his sculptures. His Dora Maar sculpture was sold 18.000.000 € at Sotheby's in 2007 and is said to be part of an edition of 8 bronze sculptures. On the other hand Picasso's Garçon à la pipe was sold 77.000.000 € at Sotheby's in 2004. By following Edward Horswell method, 18.000.000 x 8 > 77.000.000, so sculpture are more expensive than paintings.

The Sladmore Gallery is specialized in both animals and humans sculptures. At the beginning Edward's parents had a gallery based next to a zoo and therefore their interest was mostly focused on animals. As Edward arrived in the gallery in 1985 he decided to offer a wilder scope of sculptures since he also had a great interest for human forms. Nowadays the gallery presents 20th Century figurative sculpture with Auguste Rodin or Aristide Maillol, but also in animals with Rembrandt Bugatti or François Pompon.

  • James Pawl Austin Jr. (2011-01-04) Report to moderator I think sculptures will get more and more collected by art lovers in the next decade. People will realize that a sculpture is a 3D art and therefore offers much more than a simple painting on a wall. And since sculptures are still being sold for smaller prices than paintings it's a good time to invest in such a great medium.
