The Galerie Berès on the Rive Gauche facing the southwest wing of the Louvre, was founded by Huguette Berès in 1952 and is now run by her daughter Anisabelle Berès. From the beginning, the gallery has focused on the graphic arts from the Far East and the avant-garde painting of the 19th and early 20th century in France, from the impressionists and post-impressionists to the modern art. Since 1995, it has turned towards the avant-garde trends of the 20th century, as well as the cubist movement. The last shows, 'Henri Laurens' in 2004, 'Au temps des Cubistes' in 2006 and 'Serge Férat' in 2010, turned out to be immense successes. The Galerie Berès is a member of the Syndicat National des Antiquaires and participates regularly in the TEFAF in Maastricht and in the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris.
The leading and growing specialty on the art market is modern art, as much as 18th Century art is declining. But, as Anisabelle Berès says, "art is cyclical with ups and downs; nowadays people are looking for modern and contemporary arts. I don't think the antiques market will disappear but the offer is shrinking because of the rarefaction".
For Anisabelle Berès, Contemporary art is speculative. The world counts a growing number of new millionaires and even billionaires who are looking for expensive works of art. But "don't forget that many contemporary art artists will loose all their value in the next year", says Anisabelle Berès. So people need to be sure to purchase the right artists which is easy for established values; but much harder for all the others. Modern art is also speculative since everyone knows Picasso, Matisse and Toulouse Lautrec, in China, France, Switzerland or anywhere else. "I even believe that Picasso's name is even more popular than Basquiat", says the gallery manager.
The artwork's quality is the only thing an investor should focus on. "I don't know who is the artist who will gain in value. It is very hard to guess. Even the galleries don't know which artist will keep on top of the market and won't collapse. The market is filled with so many artists. But as far as I am concerned I thing Soulages will keep rising in prices", says Anisabelle Berès. Good to know !
