For Olivier Delvaille, expert in 18th Century furniture and works of art, "the variety of styles that this period has created and obviously the quality of such artworks made by the European craftsmen" is what makes this specialty so attractive.
Nevertheless, Since a decade the low and average quality 18th Century furniture has decline in value. "I believe this is due to several facts. First of all the global crisis has an impact on art sales. I also think that during the last 50 years this art has been overvalued: because an item was sold as 18th Century it would make high prices on the market. Nowadays we realize that this Century has created masterpieces but also very cheap quality items. So these average quality items have decline in value and won't rise again", says Olivier Delvaille.
On the other hand the great quality pieces haven't lost their value and the museum quality ones have even grown in value. One needs to understand the difference between works of art - that should be called "Beaux Arts" - and the more common pieces.
Founded in 1858 in Madrid, the Gallery Delvaille settled in Paris, Rue de Beaune, in 1955. It is now directed by Olivier Delvaille who succeeded his mother, Mrs Delvaille and still values her precious expertise. He specializes in paintings of the French schools from the middle of the 19th century to the post-impressionists, and also in exceptional French furniture of the 18th century. The strict standards he applies when selecting paintings and furniture have enabled him over the years to establish a strong bond of confidence and friendship with his clients.

Yes 18th Century furniture has been SO MUCH OVERVALUED. I can now remember going at the Puces of Saint Ouen in Paris: huge prices for cheap quality arts. I came back last december and realized that half of the galleries are down. Specualtion is everywhere, even in the classic Louis 15 and Louis 16 furniture.
