"What I like so much about African Arts is the spiritual aspect of these pieces. Statues have often a lot of charisma, since these masks have been created for animism reasons", says Jacques Germain, expert in Primitive Arts. Through these sculptures, man can feel this ceremonial spirit.
African Art collectors don't collect such pieces for religious reasons. Their motivation is more related to the influence African Arts have had on the European art revolution that occurred at the beginning of the 20th Century. Tribal art had many influences on modern art, such as we can see in the Demoiselles d'Avignon, by Pablo Picasso.
"I personally like "classical" arts and specially the Equatorial region with Fang, Kota and Pounou arts which are very searched for on the market. Some collectors are even more audacious and will collect pieces from the Benin area, which are related to the Court that I really enjoy", says the gallery owner.
African Arts collectors mostly come from Western Countries: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain and also from North America, but since a decade this market suffers of a lack of good dealers in New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco. There are still many things to discover in Nigeria which has a great art creation, but has still very little collectors. People use to mainly focus on classic and sure values. "I would recommend a collector to now focus on the Nigerian arts which might be great investments. A few ethnic groups are overvalued, but many others are still undervalued", says Jacques Germain.
