Le Couvent des Ursulines, Charles X furniture

Le Couvent des Ursulines, Charles X furniture

Jean-François Taziaux and Vincent de Lange are the managers of the Couvent des Ursulines gallery. The gallery is based in Liège since 20 years and is specialized in the Charles X period from 1820 to 1830.

"What I like so much about Charles X furniture are the superb parquetries and woods which are the symbols of a specific period", says Vincent de Lange. This style was created by the Duchesse de Berry in 1818.

"Regarding the value of Charles X furniture, I believe it is a sure value", says Vincent de Lange. It is still very trendy in France, in the US and in Brazil where can be found great collections which were made in the 70's and 80's. The Couvent des Ursulines gallery is nearly the only gallery to be specialized in this period. Same for the 18th Century furniture for which top quality pieces still reach high prices, the Charles X period furniture is a sure value. The Charles X period is considered as a great creation period. The craftsmen are the same that were used in the 18th Century, such as Jacob. This period comes right after the Empire one "so we have similar shapes and still a great quality". The bright coloured woods are used in all kinds of pieces: table, bookcases, commodes... The use of these woods are due to Napoleon's blockade which forbids English ships to trade with France, so we start working with indigenous woods and the few remaining exotic woods such as rosewood and ebony.

For Vincent de Lange, "our clients are based in Europe and America. It is now harder to trade with the US and Brazil but thanks to the French collectors who are re-discovering this period and join the other collectors from Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and the UK. The Charles X can also be found in contemporary houses since the colours are very close from the Art Deco ones. We can both provide a full decoration or single pieces that can be exhibited in any decoration, or even associated to English and/or Empire furniture, which provides great contrasts with the colours and shapes. The Charles X period is more romantic".
