Sebastian + Barquet is based in New York. This gallery has been coming to TEFAF now for three years since the opening of the design section. Nichiolas Kilner - the gallery's manager - deals with Post-War French, Italian American and Mexican design. "What I like so much about my specialty, is that the market for 20th century design is still very young, there’s still much to be learned about this section which might be a very interesting aspect to be dealing in. The design section is very young here at TEFAF". TEFAF has been running now for twenty four years, but it’s been focusing on the design section only for the last three years and it’s exciting to be involved in it.
Of course, the art market was affected by the downturn, and as a result of that there’s definitely been a polarization of the market. The very high end, there’s still a great demand for that and in the world it’s represented by TEFAF, by the dealers that come to TEFAF, by the works that they bring to the fair. "Obviously, the middle ground has been hit harder, but I think it’s still a certain long-term investment", says Nicholas Kilner.
"Without a doubt we are experiencing a growth in the Asian market, we’ve heard of a lot of interest and a lot of new business coming in from Korea and China. We’ve also seen recoveries in the American market and in the European markets. We collect Georges Nakashima for example. And our market is quieting down a little bit". Prices receded a little bit over the last couple of years, but over the last six months they started to recover fairly healthily. As well as emerging market in Asia Sebastian + Barquet saw recoveries in European and American markets, so it’s a positive sign.
If the gallery had to advice a client, they would tell him to collect works of Judd. "Donald Judd was one of the America’s most important Post-War artists, the father of minimalism. His early production pieces in metal are incredibly rare and I think highly collectable and I also think highly undervalued. So I think in the long-term works like these represent an incredibly good and solid investment", says Nicholas Kilner.
