This fantastic Régence period commode was crafted by François Mondon, one of the leading Parisian ébénistes of the 18th century. The commode is made of luxurious kingwood detailed in a geometric configuration, enhanced by doré bronze mounts and an elegant rouge marble top. Mondon is credited with the creation of some of the finest examples of Régence furniture of the mid-1700s. This particular commode, bearing the artist's stamp, is a noble specimen of his talent and skill as a master craftsman.

The French ébéniste has long been regarded as the quintessential craftsman. Prior to their introduction, the responsibility of creating furniture was solely the job of the menuisier, or joiner, who created chairs, tables and beds. In contrast, the ébéniste served as both craftsman and artisan, elevating furniture design to an art form. He applied the finest timbers to case furniture and embellished pieces with ormolu and exotic inlays. The creation of magnificent furniture, like this important example, is the result of several unique historical factors. France had the honor of being the largest and wealthiest country in all of Europe and was considered by many to be the center of the civilized world. This sparked the emergence of a thriving, elite clientele who demanded only the most spectacular material possessions. Furthermore, strict guild laws were implemented requiring only the highest quality workmanship, leaving little or no room for furniture of anything less than extraordinary. This tradition of excellence continued well into the 19th century, with fine examples such as this beautiful commode providing testament to the honorable legacy of the ébéniste.
